Somebody should patent the patent process. Quite possibly the only way to screw it up more.

I have seen this comment posted in every article related to patent abuse. In fact, I am thinking of patenting the idea of patenting the patent process, just so it never comes up on slashdot again.

This was actually about some stupid idiot who’s trying to get royalties from whoever uses XML based on two patents filled in the US in 1999 (No. 5,842,213 and No. 6,393,426)

Now, what about patenting a gas composed of

Nitrogen – 78%
Oxygen – 21%
Argon – 1%
Carbon Dioxide – .03%
Neon – .002%
Methane – .0002%
Helium – .0005%
Krypton – .0001%
Hydrogen – .00005%
Xenon – .000009%

Now *that* would be an idea!

Ubuntu wins Best Distribution Award

October 8th, 2005 SkyHorse

Ubuntu wins Best Distribution Award at the UK Linux & Open Source Awards on the 5th of October, along with a life-time award for Alan Cox, who was desperately needing one.

Ubuntu - Live CD screen shoot

What do Africa, the ISS and VeriSign have in common?

The man behind Ubuntu, who by the way is trying very hard not to get filthy rich(er) from the whole thing, is Mark Shuttleworth. The same Mark who founded Thawte Consulting (only to sell it to VeriSign for $575 million USD). The same Mark who went to the International Space Station for a short 8 days holiday trip. And yes, he also started Ubuntu two years ago.

For those of you out there who still think “free software” is the same as “free beer”, remember Ubuntu is only alive after SABDFL donated $10 Million USD to the Ubuntu Foundation. (SABDFL is short for self-appointed benevolent dictator for life, apparently what developers call its founder, Mark, in a sweet kind of way. Hey, for $10mil, who wouldn’t?)

The Million Dollar Homepage – How to make easy money

September 21st, 2005 SkyHorse

There are some ideas I wish I have had before they appeared. From all of them, this is the most amazing one.
This guy all of the sudden thought about selling ‘pixels‘ of his homepage. The idea was to break the homepage’s space into 10×10 pixel squares and sell each square to anyone willing to pay $1USD per pixel, that is, $100 per square. In these squares you would place an image with a link to your website.
I think he’s absolutely mad: Who on earth would pay $100 to put an image on a 10 pixel square in this unknown personal website?
Just as last night when I was wrong about that other guy doing a big bluff, this guy is making big bucks.
He opened the website on the 26th of August and after only 3 weeks he’s not only having more than 100.000 unique visitors a day (top 3rd “climber” with Alexa) he sold more than 64 thousand pixels (that’s $64.000 to you and me). And all because he wanted to pay for his University fees on his own (did I mention he’s 21?). Media agencies beware: there’s a new kind of marketeer in town!

Update: This idea seems to have created a whole new market, by the looks of the copycats already found on the web:

H2N-Gen: VaporWare?

September 19th, 2005 SkyHorse

Can this man be the messiah everyone predicted?
Everyone wants to cut car emissions. Sooner or later, someone will find a way to do it. Joe Williams hopes it’s him.
Or could he be full of steam and his invention not more than Vaporware? (pun intended). Don’t go be to sceptical and read on…
